Our Lions started the 2007/08 league campaign with a defeat. The Lions deserved something better from this match but we could not manage to score. Ghajnsielem punished us for the missed chances and scored the only goal of the match. Our Lions were in command of the match for long moments but could not penetrate the solid defence of the opponents. The strikers missed several opportunities and as goals matters in a football match, Ghajnsielem picked the three points as they took one of their chances. The Lions were more dangerous in the early stages and in the 5th minute an effort by Mark Muscat ended just wide. The Blacks started to share more play as time passed by and in the 23rd minute they went close to scoring through a header by Charles Mercieca that was saved with difficulty by goalie Demis Bajada. Sannat replied immediately with an effort by Kennth Mercieca following a cross by Fernando de Andrade that just missed the target. In the 27th minute Ghajnsielem’s goal passed through a serious danger. Kenneth Mercieca had a closed ranged shot cleared off the line by defender David Agius and from the rebound it was goalie Victor Agius who neutralised an attempt by Errol Grima. Sannat were punished for the missed chances as Ghajnsielem opened the score in the 32nd minute, when Darren Debono won a tussle with goalkeeper Demis Bajada on the edge of the area and placed the ball easily into an open goal. Until the end of the first half Sannat’s reaction was sterile and the blacks kept danger away from their area. In the first part of the second period Ghajnsielem tried to control play. However, the Lions increased their efforts as time passed by and produced some pressure over Ghajnsielem’s rearguard, going close to scoring on more than one occasion. In the 60th minute an angled shot by Mark Muscat ended on the side of the net and five minutes later a freekick by Cristiano de Oliveira ended just wide. In the 67th minute goalie Victor Agius blocked with difficulty a low shot by Fernando de Andrade. Sannat were again dangerous in the 71st minute when de Andrade entered the area with a fine move but Kenneth Mercieca failed to connect with the inviting cross. The same Mercieca went again close to level the score in the 86th minute when his close ranged header ended wide following a cross by de Andrade. Two minutes later Ghajnsielem’s rearguard cleared badly a cross from the flank and from the loose ball Mark Muscat’s shot missed the target. Referee : Paul Caruana |
