Our
Lions obtained another point in their first draw of the season. It can be
said that it was a fair result as both sides had their moments during the
match.
For our Lions it was our first clean sheet of the season too. But it was not enough to win us the three points. In the first half Hotspurs were more aggressive altough goal opportunities were very rare on either side. After the break the game was more open and both sides had more goal scoring opportunities. It has to be said that both sets of players had to play in continous rain and in very bad weather conditions. With this point the Lions are now third placed by ten points, three behind the same Hotspurs. The Hotspurs were more adventurous. In the early stages cross shots by Jason Portelli and John Paul Grima ended just wide. Sannat replied with an effort by Mark Muscat in the 15th minute that ended wide. The Hotspurs had a good patch of play midway through he first half and produce some pressure over their opponents, going close to scoring through an effort by Daniel Farrugia following a corner action and a shot by Fabiano Bassi that were both cleared off the line by Justin Agius. Seconds from half time Sannat’s Cristiano de Oliveira had a strike from outside the area that ended inches wide. The match became more exciting after the break with more scoring opportunities at the two goals. In the 52nd minute an attempt by Ryan Grech was well saved by goalie Demis Bajada and the Lions replied with a long ranged shot by Mario Cutajar that missed the target. In the 56th minute Sannat’s Kenneth Mercieca had a header from a free kick by Paul Spiteri. Sannat’s goalie Demis Bajada was again called to make a difficult save in the 58th minute following a free kick by Ricardo Saverino and minutes later Fabiano Bassi headed wide form a good position following a cross by Ryan Grech. In the 61st minute Victoria’s Jason Portelli had a cross shot that hit the crossbar and in the 67th minute a low shot by Sannat’s Fernando de Andrade ended high. Sannat were dangerous in the 69th minute through a long ranged shot by Mark Muscat that ended just high and in an immediate reply by Victoria, Daniel Farrugia entered the area with a solo action, passed to an unmarked Ricardo Saverino but the latter shot incredibly wide with an open goal at his mercy. Victoria’s goalie Mark Grima was well placed in the 74th minute to block a low shot by Fernando de Andrade following a solo effort. Referee: Anton Zammit |
