Lions achieved their second consecutive victory in the  league.  Another important three points were won and now we are in third place, three points behind Hotspurs and Nadur but who have a game in hand.  There was no question were the points were going as the Lions profited from the less experienced side of Xaghra and scored seven goals.

It was important for the Greens to win this match to give them confidence and believe in themselves that they can play well and win matches.  Fernando De Andrade scored a hat trick while Errol Grima scored a brace.  The other two goals were scored by hard worker Mark Muscat and by striker Kenneth Mercieca.  The only disappointing point was that  we conceded a goal although we have to mention that goalie Demise Bajada made three or four good saves during the match.

Sannat’s goalkeeper was called to make a difficult save after only two minutes of play when he blocked a direct free kick by Leandro Blanco de Castro. The Lions settled better as time passed by, took command at the midfield and play was more within Xaghra’s half. However, they found it difficult to create danger, while Xaghra’s fast breaks through John Camilleri were occasionally more threatening.

In the 18th minute Fernando de Andrade and Paul Spiteri both failed to connect to Errol Grima’s freekcik. Xaghra replied with a close ranged shot by John Camilleri from a corner action that was blocked by the defence.

The Lions opened the score in the 22nd minute. Fernando de Andrade won a tussle at Xaghra’s defence, dribbled the goalkeeper and placed easily into an open goal. Minutes later the same de Andrade was released in the area by Paul Spiteri but Xaghra’s goalie was well placed and managed to block the attempt of the Brazilian striker. Sannat doubled the score in the 33rd minute through Mark Muscat, who was unmarked on the left by Errol Grima, entered the area and placed in goal from an angled position.

Xaghra were close to reduce the arrears in the final minutes of the first half. A shot by Leandro Blanco de Castro from an indirect free kick in Sannat’s area ended just high and an effort by Mark Buhagiar following a mishap at Sannat’s defence just missed the target. Seconds from half time Sannat’s Errol Grima had an attempt from the edge of the area that ended high.

Two minutes after the restart Sannat lost a good opportunity to increase the lead when Fernando de Andrade entered the area with a solo action but concluded badly from a good position.

Xaghra were close to scoring in the 50th minute but a shot by Chris Buttigieg from a corner action was cleared off the line by Andrew Debono. Minutes later a header by Daniel Bartolo from another corner action ended just over the crossbar. Xaghra were punished for the missed chances and the Lions score two goals in the space of six minutes to make sure of the victory.

In the 55th minute Fernando de Andrade netted his second personal goal with a low shot after dribbling his direct opponent and in the 61st minute Errol Grima made it 4-0 from a corner action. In the meantime, Sannat’s goalie saved with difficulty a free kick by John Camilleri. Although there was no more doubt about the victory, Xaghra kept trying to score a consolation goal while Sannat tried to increase their lead.

The Lions reached their objective by scoring two more goals in the space of one minute. Fernando de Andrade registered his personal hat-trick with a goal scored in the 72nd minute and one minute later the Brazilian striker unmarked Kenneth Mercieca and the latter placed into an open goal to make it 6-0.

In the 74th minute Sannat’s goalie Demis Bajada made a good save following a close ranged shot by Mark Buhagiar, but Xaghra scored their consolation goal in the 76th minute. Sannat’s rearguard failed to clear a free kick by Leandro Blanco de Castro and substitute Victor John Saliba netted from close distance.

In the 85th minute the score became 7-1 with a goal by Errol Grima who ran along half pitch from the left, dribbled the goalkeeper and adefender before placing the ball into an open goal.
