Our Lions were knocked out
from the quarter final of the GFA Cup by Ghajnsielem FC. Ghajnsielem won
the match by two goals to nil. The Lions had a good start to the match and
could have opened the score first. Midway through the first half Sabri Rais
was injured and we missed him a lot up front. Ghajnsielem took the lead
five minutes from the break. In the second half they organized themselves
to protect their lead. Three minutes from stoppage time they sealed the
issue after converting a penalty which was partially saved by Bajada but
then scored from the rebound.
The Lions had a better start and in the 3rd minute a free kick by Paul Spiteri was not cleared by the defence. The ball bounced in front of the goal mouth and hit the crossbar but Rais failed to take advantage from the rebound. In the 8th minute an effort by Fernando de Andrade ended just over the crossbar and Ghajnsielem replied in the 11th minute wi8th a strike by Brian Meilak that ended wide. Minutes later a good shot by Ghajnsielem’s Jerry Olbuleke ended over the crossbar and in the 17th minute Sannat were unlucky when a header by Sabri Rais following a cross by Errol Grima hit the crossbar. Three minutes later Sannat’s Cristiano de Oliveira concluded over the crossbar from a corner action. Ghajnsielem were again dangerous with a fast break by Jerry olbuleke that ended high and in the 22nd minute Joseph Attard concluded badly from a good position following an inviting pass by Frank Lee Galea. The same Attard went close to scoring on another two occasions. In the 24th minute his shot hit the side of the net and in the other action Ghajnsielem’s striker had his close ranged shot blocked by goalie Demis Bajada. The Blacks opened the score in the 41st minute through Jerry Olbuleke, who entered the area with a solo action and headed in an empty goal following a rebound from the goalkeeper. Sannat best opportunity to level the score arrived in the dying moments of the first half when Fernando de Andrade was stopped with an excellent intervention by goalie Victor Agius. After the resumption the Lions were demoralised and Ghajnsielem were in control of play in the midfield. The Blacks could have doubled the score in the 53rd minute but Jerry Olbuleke’s shot from an ideal position ended high. Ghajnsielem made sure of the victory in the 87th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for a challenge between Andrew Debono and Olbuleke. Joseph Attard’s shot form the spot kick was partially saved by goalie Demis Bajada but Attard placed in an aempty goal from the rebound. Referee: Paul Apap |
